Steve does not have a webpage. I think he should make one.
Steve and Josh and I are reading the Sublime Object of Ideology together
in a reading group. OMG that book is so fucking hard. So yesterday when we
were discussing the book (note: we have met 3 times for about 2 to 3 hours
each meeting and we are STILL on chapter ONE!) and I said I wonder
what Zizek would say about the Matrix and so I looked up on the web
and voila!
And also CTHEORY came out again yesterday, this time with an article on
Michael Jackson
that I thought was rather nifty! Here is a cool quote:
It is in this juvenile
ecstasy of the modern that we must locate the progeny of the future and
initially ponder why a man, who just wants to be a boy, is apparently
powerless to profess his innocence and relinquish his sexuality, despite
assurances everywhere that he can and must.
Ok, so on Valentine's Day
Steve and I made cookies. 3 different kinds. One was oatmeal scotchies. And
I got the recipe from the back of the Nestle butterscotch morsels bag
and now the bag is empty and I'm afraid I will never be able to find the
recipe again. So I'm saving it here for posterity.
1/14 c flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cinnamon
2 sticks butter
3/4 c sugar
3/4 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
3 uncooked oats
1 2/3 c morsels
I stuck took out some of the morsels and stuffed in some raisins (which is
why I have the bag still).
Oven 375
Combine flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon in one bowl and sugar, brown
sugar, eggs, and vanilla in another. Add flour stuff to sugar stuff
gradually. Add oats, morsels (and raisins). Drop by rounded tablespoon onto
ungreased baking sheets. Cook for about 7 (chewey) to 12 (crispy) minutes.
See? Easy.

In Heavy Rotation: Norah Jones, Come Away With Me
Another Josh Gunn Moment (tm), preserved in my blog for posterity and public
memory.
Excerpts from email from Josh, entitled "Mardi Party," to CMST-L,
the departmental listserv, dated 12/24/03, 6:00 PM:
Dear Commies,
On behalf of the Mardi-Party Planning Committee (Lisa F., Gretchen, and Me)
I would like to cordially invite y'all to the N-th Annual Spanish Town Mardi
Party this Saturday, March 1st!
Please come drink with us to celebrate our impending fast, as well as
Danielle and Andy's impending, God-sanctioned buffet of naughty nuptial
indulgences (I will also be selling indulgences, but you must verify you are
naughty).
Gretchen has designed the most GLORIOUS FLIER, which you may print out and
post on your office doors:
http://members.cox.net/jgunn2/invite.jpg
Actually, the flyer is "typical" Mardi Gras, I'm told, so do not open
this in the sight-lines of youngsters. It is quite the sight for eyes that
are far from sore.
Gretchen, Mindi, Mel, and Lisa F. are providing a keg of beer. Loretta
and I will be providing free Long Island Iced Teas until the supply runs out
(and there WILL BE a supply); they'll be Gumbo and the typical munchies.
Excerpts from email from Josh, entitled "Long Islands,"
mistakenly sent to CMST-L, the departmental listserv, dated 12/24/03,
6:20 PM:
Hey Loretta,
I'll take you up on your offer to go in on the long islands. I typcially buy

I finally added a sig file to my emails. I got the quote from an
anti-war speech given by
Senator Robert
Byrd, which I've saved on my website because I think it rocks. The
speech was sent out over H-Rhetor by Tom Powell Bullock.
Here is my sig file quote:
I truly must question the judgment of any President
who can say that a massive unprovoked military attack on a nation which is
over 50% children is "in the highest moral traditions of our country."

Listening: Norah Jones, Come Away With Me
Shoutout to
Clancy Ratliff at UMN who surfed my website. She has a blog called
Cyborgwoman.
She scolded me for not keeping up to date on my neglected journal and blog.
Hence, I'm loading up what's been sitting on my desktop. Of course, her
scold is an argument for why I should reconsider blogging the "normal" way.
But since when am I ever normal?

Tonite Steve and I saw
Cirque du
Soleil with Loretta. It was sooo amazing. The show we saw was called
Dralion, which is Dragon - Lion. From the
Dralion website:
Dralion is the fusion of ancient Chinese circus tradition and the
avant-garde approach of Cirque du Soleil. The show's name is drawn from its
two main symbols -- the dragon, representing the East, and the lion,
representing the West. Dralion derives much of its inspiration from Eastern
philosophy with its perpetual quest for harmony between humankind and
nature.
My favorite act was the
aerial pas de deux
The clowns were hysterical even though they didn't speak any English.

Listening: DJ Josh Gunn, Philophobia II
Ok, so Josh made a valentine's compilation. Two actually. One for people
who like v-day and one for people who hate it. Even though I love v-day
(despite the fact that this year's started to suck as soon as cookie-making
was over), I took the hate compilation (Philo-phobia!) because the songs
were better. Josh, eclectic DJ extraordinaire.
Steve and I going to London for Spring Break! We are staying at
the
Wedgewood Hotel, I think. YAY!

All this anti-war activism (that never gets reported, of course, except
in places like the
Village Voice)
reminds me of my grandmother, Anna Zuckerman, who was a peace activist for
pretty much all of her life. I remember when I was a child, during the Viet
Nam war, she had a framed poster on her wall that said:
War is
unhealthy for children and other living things. I still have a patch
of that slogan that I've never used. So it occurred to me that I could buy a
copy of that poster and put it up somewhere, probably at school. I found
some interesting stuff about that poster, most of which I had forgotten or
barely knew about because I was so young. Here's what I learned:
1. CBS censored this poster! From a list of "13
Outrageous Moments of U.S. TV Censorship":
THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR (1968)
CBS censored the display of a Mother's Day card that read, in part, "War is
not healthy for children and other living things... We who have given life
must be dedicated to preserving it. Please talk peace." CBS gave as its
reason-besides the excuse that it didn't permit "political positions"-the
explanation that the Los Angeles mothers' group that distributed the card
hadn't been cleared by the House Un-American Activities Committee.
2. Mother's Day started as peace activism.
Looking for the history of the logo, I found a
press release from the Million Mom March of San Antonio (a .pdf
file) that talks about the history of mother's day as peace activism. It
also talked about the organization Another Mother For Peace, which
went defunct in 1985. The poster is the organization's logo. I vaguely
remember this.
3. Joanne Woodward is a long
time peace activist.
Who knew?
Probably my grandmother
And a lot of other people
On her website there is a bboard discussion of protesting the war and
resurrecting AMFP. The bboard has
posts by
the son of the woman who designed the logo/poster.

Digipen is in this month's Rolling
Stone!
RS 916.
Unfortunately the website doesn't have the article, but I'm excited for
Malia. Apparently people leave that school with jobs waiting for them.
My letter to Faisel about the Nigerians:
Dear Faisal
Ahmed:
I was terribly saddened to read your tragic life story. You are a special
person to want to leave the world a better place than how you found it. I
wish I could help you in your charity efforts and your efforts to reclaim
your finances. I'm so glad you are willing to offer me ten percent of your
24 million dollars to help you in your efforts. Unfortunately, right now,
I am terribly busy holding down two jobs (one is as a housekeeper, the
other in retail sales, at a jewelry store) while I work my way through
school and pay for my child's ADD treatments. I do have email contact with
two people who might be able to help you. They are financial wizards and I
am sure they will be able to help you find appropriate charities. Maybe
they could even help you set up a foundation. Let me give you their names
and contact information:
1. Dr. Frank F. Bamawo
Foreign Liason Office
Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation
Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
frankbamawo37@netscape.net
Dr. Bamawo has an account at Apex bank.
Dr. Bamawo is a civil service accountant who works for the Nigerian
government.
2. Dr. Rasheed Bako
Dr. Bako has a poor telecommunications system and he is unable to share
his address with me at the present.
He does, however, have substantial experience with finances. He, too, is a
civil service employee with the Nigerian government.
He is in the process of buying Agro Allied equipment. Don't tell anyone
that, however, because you might get into trouble for insider trading if
you purchase their stocks. I have it on good authority that it is sure to
make millions, but you didn't hear it from me.
Fortunately, I have 2 email addresses for Dr. Bako:
bako11@ecplaza.net
isamk@personal.ro
I do expect a small finders fee of, say, one percent, if this venture is
successful. I surely could use the money.

I'm sick as a dog. I've been running a temperature for two days now. I
wish I were dead. Though that's a moot point because I -feel- dead. Anyway,
I've been too sick to sit down and finish my abstract for the
feminism(s) and
rhetoric conference, which was due February 1. Lucky for me, though,
I hopped to the website and saw that they extended the deadline to March 31!
w00t! In other news, my Oreos are stale.
