Fall 2004

Assignment Sheet – Style Sheet

Objectives: This assignment allows students to familiarize themselves with the style manual that is appropriate to their area of study and to begin learning the basic citation or documentation mechanics required of academic writing.

Goal: By the end of this assignments, students should be able to (1) read a style manual and find the proper documentation format for a variety of sources; (2) familiar with the basic citation style of the appropriate style manual; (3) produce a "clean" style sheet or style manual "cheat sheet" for later work as graduate students.

Directions:

1. Choose the appropriate style manual. In order to do this, make sure that you consult with your advisor, the other professors in your area, and the senior graduate students to make sure that you make the best choice.

2. PURCHASE the appropriate style manual. (Note: If you buy used, make sure that you buy the most current edition.)

3. Compose your style sheet by fastidiously following the format in your style manual.

4. Your style sheet should include the footnote and bibliographic citation for the following types of documents:

single authored book
multiple authored book
edited collection
chapters in an edited collection
forward or introduction in an edited collection
book with multiple volumes
translated book
edition of a book
classical reference
single authored journal article
multiple authored journal article
newspaper or magazine article
paper read at a conference or convention
personal communication
non-book source
website

5. Note: You MAY NOT simply use the sources already listed as examples in your style manual, nor may you use the sources that are part of our class syllabus. You may, however, use your readings for your other class or any project you are working on or have worked on in the past.

6. Your style sheet must follow the structure attached. It also must indicate in the title what style manual you are following. Example:

Style Sheet – MLA

Grading:

A style sheet with greater than 10 errors will receive a C.

A style sheet with greater than 20 errors will receive an F.
